Socializing Sophie

Sophie has settled in nicely so I decided its time to start taking her out to different places to get her socialized. On Tuesday, I took her for her first walk around the neighborhood. She did really well! She walked beautifully on the leash and even stopped when I stopped and patiently waited for me to continue. She seemed to enjoy being able to explore again and smell different things. It was definitely a success. On Wednesday I took her to petsmart and she was a little unsure of things with so much going on, but still did really well. She kind of just walked with her head down a little but was still interested in all the new smells...especially in the treat aisle :) She greeted all the doggies very nicely and let people pet her as well. Everyone commented on how beautiful of a dog she is. I also talked to a pet food specialist because Sophie isn't eating as much as I'd like her to. You can tell she's gained weight, but she still doesn't finish her meals and I really think she should have gained more by now. So now I have her on Bil-Jac. It's also supposed to improve her coat and eyes as well. The first time I offered it to her, she ate a little bit of it but not much. Then I offered it to Zoey, and Sophie seemed a lot more interested lol. After Zoey took a few bites, I gave it back to Sophie and she finished it ha ha :) Don't forget to take a look at the donation site every now again...I just added most of the cash donations to the site as well so we are much closer to our goal! Thanks again for the support. We love you guys :)

Get Ready to laugh :)

I wanted to share a funny store with everyone about Sophie. Usually when I am not home Sophie is outside because she prefers to be out there and when I am home she comes in. Well the other day my roommate was letting Zoey inside before he left for work and Sophie snuck in as well. Sophie went straight to my room and laid down and my roommate didnt have enough time to let her back outside. He called me and let me know and so I had him just close my room door because I haven't tested her alone in this house yet. I assumed she would just relax and take a nap. And I was right...look at the pics to see where I found her :) My sister got home a few minutes before I did and when I got there I noticed my room door was open, I took a peek inside and didnt see Sophie so I asked if she had let her out already. Her response was for me to look again. Sophie had squeezed herself underneath a very small end table that I have in the corner. There was plenty of stuff on top of glass table and below on the shelf as well. Sophie managed to move all of it out of the way so she could sleep there! She looked so comfortable too! When I called her name, she just looked at me like "Oh hi, don't mind me, I'm just napping" Needless to say, it was quite difficult to get her out from under there lol! One thing I can say is that Sophie brings a smile to my face every single day, one way or the other! Enjoy :)

04/09 - Sophie was rescued 4 weeks ago today

Today we have reached the 4 week mark. Every new day brings us further away from Sophie's horrible past. I brought Sophie to Wincor on Wednesday and she did great! She just laid down for everyone to pet her. Sophie is getting better on the leash too. She isn't nearly as frightened of it as she used to be. Sophie decided she wanted to play a game of chase that morning too. She saw me grab her leash and she playfully ran the other direction a few times and then decided to come to me. Just when Sophie was started to show interest in playing with Zoey, I'm going to have to restrict that for a little while. Zoey had a vet appointment on Wednesday and it turns out she tore her ACL in both knees!! I'm not even sure how it happened, but she is going to need surgery and will have a 6 week confinement period for recovery. I'm working on getting the money together for the surgery and will be taking her to Waco to her old vet. They quoted me half the price of what the vet in Austin quoted! Here are some pics of Zoey and Sophie waiting at the fence as I left for work the other morning. Please keep Sophie, and now Zoey too, in your prayers :)

04/6 - 3 1/2 Weeks after rescue

It was a busy weekend so I apologize for not posting sooner. Sophie is still doing great and is acting more and more like a dog should every day. She gets excited when I come home from work and has started to even run around the yard when I first get home. She only takes a few steps before she realizes what she's doing, but she's getting there :)I bought her a new collar over the weekend. Its a pretty light blue with a bright pink tag that has her name and my number on it. Sophie has a vet appointment scheduled with Animal Trustees of Austin on June 2nd. Its a discounted clinic so they rarely have openings and this is the soonest we could get her in. The good news is that I was quoted half the price of what the first vet quoted me. The cost of treatment shouldn't be more than $300!! And she has already started her pre-treatment (3 pills twice a day). Things are starting to fall into place for us. Sophie seems to have accepted this as her home and she is definitely happy about it. She almost played with Zoey the other day! She did a little play bow which made Zoey very excited and then made Sophie a little nervous....so close ha ha! Here are some recent pictures of her with her new collar and pics of her collar as well. Thanks for all the support :)

(Some of the pics have a blue tint to them, I didn't realize this option was selected on my phone before taking the pics...oops)

More photos and videos of Sophie

I took a video of Sophie yesterday. You can still see that she gets nervous but she is trying to come out of her shell. Seeing her wag her tail is amazing though :) And you can also see how much of a spaz Zoey is. She is off in her own little world. If you can't tell, her favorite thing to do is roll in the grass :) Enjoy!

You can see her tail is wagging here and she is a happy girl now :)

Sophie is enjoying the sun and getting a little sleepy

03/26 - 2 weeks after rescue

Sophie is doing great and improving every day. She is still on the thin side, but that is to be expected since its hard to keep weight on a dog with heartworms. Sophie gets excited to see me and has learned my schedule. When I leave for work in the morning she is sitting at the fence watching me leave, and when I come home from work - there she is again. Its a great feeling :) Sophie is eating well and continuing to take her medicine twice a day. She goes back to the vet next Saturday for another round of shots and to discuss future treatments. When I first brought Sophie home, she did not know what to think of my other dog Zoey. Now she is showing interest in her and seems to enjoy her company. Zoey on the other hand is dying for Sophie to play with her. I just tell her all in good time. Sophie enjoys me petting her and loves belly rubs. She spends her days laying in the sun and just observing her surroundings. The first week or so Sophie would just lay in the corner and not get up much. She is now starting to explore and enjoy her backyard. Sophie is proving to be a great dog. Here are some more recent pictures...she's gorgeous!
